FOLHA Professional Houseplant Mix

The secret starts below the soil line.

Beautiful foliage is only half the story of a healthy houseplant. What happens below the soil is just as important.

At Folha, we believe that one of the biggest differences between simply keeping a houseplant alive and allowing it to truly thrive is the quality and structure of the growing medium surrounding its roots.

That is why we don't believe in treating all potting soil as the same.

Our Folha Professional Houseplant Mix has been developed as a premium growing medium for everyday tropical and foliage houseplants, balancing moisture retention with drainage, aeration and root support.

Our Houseplant Mix

Our core formulation consists of:

60% White Baltic Peat
15% Coco Fibre
15% Coco Peat
10% Perlite

Each component performs a different role. Together they create the balance that healthy houseplant roots need.

60% White Baltic Peat

The foundation of our mix.

High-quality white Baltic peat provides a light, consistent growing medium with excellent moisture-holding capacity while maintaining valuable air space around the roots when correctly structured.

Unlike heavy garden soil, peat-based growing media are lightweight and allow us to control the physical structure of the substrate far more precisely.

It provides the foundation from which we can tailor our specialist mixes for different groups of houseplants.

15% Coco Fibre

Coco fibre adds valuable structure to the mix.

Its longer fibres help prevent the substrate from becoming overly compacted and encourage the small air spaces that roots require.

Healthy roots don't only need water—they need oxygen.

A substrate that remains dense and saturated for too long can dramatically reduce the amount of oxygen available around the roots.

15% Coco Peat

Coco peat—or coco coir pith—helps balance moisture throughout the substrate.

It absorbs and holds moisture while still contributing to a relatively open growing medium. Combined with Baltic peat, it helps create more even moisture distribution around the root system.

This is particularly valuable for indoor plants, where watering conditions are very different from plants growing outdoors in the ground.

10% Perlite

Those small white particles in our soil are there for an important reason.

Perlite increases air space and drainage within the substrate.

It helps water move through the pot while reducing the tendency of the growing medium to compact tightly around the roots.

The result is a lighter, more aerated root environment.

Why the Correct Soil Matters

There is no single perfect soil for every houseplant.

A Monstera growing naturally in a tropical forest does not experience the same root conditions as a cactus growing in an arid environment. An orchid growing attached to a tree has completely different requirements from a moisture-loving fern.

Yet they are often sold the same bag of generic potting soil.

At Folha, we approach soil differently.

We look at how the plant naturally grows and then create a substrate with the appropriate balance of:

Moisture retention · Drainage · Aeration · Structure · Root support

The objective is not simply to make water drain quickly. The objective is to create the correct relationship between water and oxygen around the roots.

Too much water retention can leave roots deprived of oxygen.

Too little water retention can allow fine roots to dry excessively between waterings.

The right substrate helps create the balance.

Different Plants. Different Roots. Different Soil.

Our professional houseplant mix provides an excellent foundation for many foliage plants, but specialist groups benefit from different formulations.

Aroids such as Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium and many Alocasia generally benefit from a more open, chunky and highly aerated mix.

Ferns typically appreciate a finer substrate capable of maintaining more consistent moisture while still allowing the roots to breathe.

Cacti & Succulents require substantially faster drainage and lower water retention.

Orchids require exceptional airflow around their roots and are generally grown in a very open medium rather than conventional potting soil.

Carnivorous plants have highly specialised substrate requirements and should not simply be planted into ordinary fertilised houseplant soil.

Terrarium plants require a substrate designed for the unique moisture and humidity conditions created inside an enclosed or semi-enclosed environment.

Propagation requires its own approach, where cleanliness, moisture control and oxygen availability are particularly important for developing new roots.

This is why Folha develops different soil blends for different plant groups rather than expecting one bag of soil to do everything.

Healthy Plants Start With Healthy Roots

When customers look at a beautiful houseplant, they naturally notice the leaves first.

We look at the roots.

Strong foliage, vigorous new growth and a plant's ability to cope with its indoor environment all depend heavily on the condition of its root system.

Good plant care therefore begins long before fertiliser, leaf treatments or styling.

It begins with the right plant, in the right pot, planted in the right substrate.

That's one of the secrets behind the healthy-looking plants at Folha.

FOLHA

Professional growing media for healthier houseplants.

Our Folha Professional Houseplant Mix is formulated for general foliage houseplants. Specialist plants may require a different Folha substrate or additional components. Correct watering, light, temperature and nutrition remain essential to overall plant health.
